Climate change

An overview of our approach to emissions management, energy use and climate-related initiatives.

Through its investment in United Plantations, UIE supports efforts to reduce GHG emissions and increase the use of renewable energy. These efforts form an important part of UP’s sustainability strategy.

United Plantations has measured its environmental footprint through a full life cycle assessment since 2008 and was the first palm oil company in the world to do so. Investments in biogas plants, biomass boilers, solar energy and its own light railway contribute to reducing its climate impact.

GHG emissions

United Plantations has made significant progress in reducing its carbon footprint and GHG emissions. From 2004 to 2025, United Plantations achieved a 69% reduction in total GHG emissions, per kg. of refined oil, when including indirect land use changes (iLUC) and nature conservation offsets.

Renewable energy

Over the past two decades, United Plantations has steadily increased the share of renewable energy in its energy mix, with the ambition of achieving 100% renewable electricity consumption. This transition has been supported by significant investments in biomass, biogas and solar photovoltaic technologies.

In addition, the energy supply between the Jendarata oil mill and Unitata refinery, and between Optimill and the UniFuji refinery, help maximise the use of surplus energy generated by the oil mills.

Reducing "carbon footprint"

United Plantations is actively investing in projects that support its climate ambitions and help reduce its carbon footprint.

Renewable energy projects Generating renewable energy from biomass and biogas to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

United Plantations has invested in biomass and biogas facilities that convert palm oil mill effluent into renewable energy. All mills are equipped with biogas plants and are fully energy self-sufficient. In addition, one mill exports electricity generated from biogas to the national grid, helping to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Transportation Improving transport efficiency while significantly reducing fossil fuel consumption.

United Plantations has expanded its light railway network to provide a more efficient and lower-carbon method of transporting fresh fruit bunches (FFB). The network has grown from 479 km in 2015 to 613 km in 2025 and uses around ten times less fossil fuel per tonne of FFB transported than conventional tractor and lorry transport.

Energy efficiency Improving energy efficiency through modern technology and lower-carbon energy solutions.

United Plantations continues to improve energy efficiency across its plantations and processing facilities through investments in modern equipment, advanced technologies and more efficient production methods. Initiatives such as biogas and steam turbines, solar power and automated control systems help reduce fossil fuel consumption and optimise energy use

Sustainable agriculture Protecting natural resources through responsible plantation management and efficient use of by-products.

United Plantations applies best practices in plantation management to protect soil, water resources and biodiversity. Palm oil mill and refinery effluents are treated before discharge or field irrigation, and continuous investments in technology help reduce environmental impacts. Biomass utilisation also supports nutrient recycling and reduces the need for chemical fertilisers and pesticides.
